Brazilian ethanol produced from sugar cane may help the United States to meet its legal requirements for renewable fuels, while reducing emissions in that country. This was one of the conclusions presented by the Sugar Cane Industry Union Unica) to the United States Environmental Protection Agency. "We showed emphatically and with scientific arguments that Brazilian ethanol is certainly a more than appropriate alternative for the Americans",said the chief representative of Unica for North America, Joel Velasco.
The acceptance by EPA of this proposal could generate a demand for sugar ethanol that would reach up to 75 billion gallons in 2022. The letter refutes the errors in calculations of emissions from the EPA in two key areas. Among them the non-inclusion of bioelectricity credits produced by the cane bagasse. Also criticizes the calculating model for emissions resulting from the indirect effects of land use – ILUC. |
